That’s a lot. To figure out the new overall gear ratios and speedometer readings I used the following formula found in Grassroots Motorsport. You can still get Dunlop SP "H" rated, and Michelin 180-15 XAS (which are closer to the redline than other 185s) and I don't know about Pirellis. My heart is set on redlines… but I think I would choose the ride over the look. Michelin Classic tires offer the most prestigious line of vintage tires in the world. The car had been sitting in a garage since 1980 and although the tires had a lot of tread remaining, they had to be replaced. Wheel and other accessories are not included.
Like 205/70R15s, they are almost equal on overall diameter to the original tires, but as I started to use the 6 as a weekend cruiser and occasional autocrosser, cornering performance became more and more of a consideration. I have tried a range higher pressures over the years and find that the ride deteriorates dramatically and that the cars ‘grip’ becomes unbalanced over these factory specs. Another important consideration is how the car will be used. I sought the advice of experts and read several articles on the subject. The Avons were pricey too, and the Commanders were around $100 each, but they are only “s” speed rated.
I run about 22 Front / 26 rear and have found this to be the best combination of ride and match to the suspension for handling. BTW mine is Pimento, black interior, roll bar, overdrive.

Thank you for the insight on tires, I have a 1976 TR6 CF51884U, it has 85,000 miles on it, all original as are the original Michelin X Redlines. My old speed at 3500 rpm was 72 mph or thereabouts. These tires work out to be less than 1% larger overall diameter than the original. The ones I had were used, theyworked for a season, but I would not recommend used tires. The tires I chose are made from a softer compound and carry a “V” speed rating. I checked Coker Tires and found the 195 R70-15 redlines looked great but were over $200 each prior to installation. p.s. I’m hoping I won’t find any fitment problems with these sized tires/wheels on a 4A. If they have to use the regular machine, have them mount from the inside of the rim, not the outside. The overall diameter of these tires is 25.5” about 1” shorter than stock. They look very good on the TR6 and provide a smooth, compliant ride. What type of tires to put on a TR6 seems to be a common question among TR6 owners. I purchased a '74 TR-6 in June. Diamondback Tires vulcanizes the redline on the Michelin Defender plus they shave all the extraneous lettering off the sidewall making for a very clean look. Redline Radial tires combine muscle car-era styling with the smooth comfortable ride of a long-lasting radial tire. I would stay away from the 205/70-15 or shorter profiles (like 60 series) unless you don’t care about how accurate your speedometer is. They are also very close in circumference to the original tire so speedometer is still very accurate. A popular replacement for the 185R15 is a 205/70R15 size tire. Bottom line: Michelins are roughly $220 per corner. If you’re into autox you might want the 205/70 because they are roughly 2% smaller diameter.

The best advice I can offer is to talk to a qualified tire technician who will listen to what your specific needs are and recommend accordingly. Now, I had a set of Pirelli P5 215VR70-15’s on the Six last year, and those are really cool, but they cost >$160 per tire. So, at 3500 rpm in fourth gear (no overdrive on my car) my speed is (25.5 X 3500) divided by (3.71 X 1.0 X 346) = 69.52 mph. The only problem that I saw was that a lot of the offerings in the “correct” size are white-walls… too tacky IMHO for a TR6. There is a great deal of difference out on the autocross course however! In addition, new 185R15s can cost upwards of $200.00 per tire— if you can find them! So as far as driveability on the road there is not a great deal of difference with my new tire choice. It costs too much to keep installing and balancing them. Being so tall and narrow these tires offer little as a performance tire. Even though I love the redlines and think they are a significant part of the cars look. Originally all US-bound TR6s came equipped with 185R15 size tires (Redline Michelins or Goodyears).

Though lowering the tire pressures has helped somewhat, the new tires will never be as ‘cushy’ as the old ones, but this is a compromise I can learn to live with because of how I wish to use the car. Fifty profile tires would be the ultimate cornering tires, but weekend driving would be hazardous as speed bumps, driveways and potholes would become damaging hazards. The trade-off for the improved performance has been a harsher ride. Any idea of what tire would best emulate the Michelin X and be able to be run at the lower tire pressures (22F/26R, probably requiring a tube)? I paid roughly $91 each installed.
